Maya's Story:

On Saturday, November 10, 2007, we passed by a sad scene of a Husky that had been hit by a car. A couple people were standing around her and she was laying still and lifeless. I then saw her lift her head and I knew we had to turn around to try to help. Many people were there that had seen the hit and run and helped to get Maya into our car and helped us while we rushed her to the emergency room where they then told us that she had a microchip and the owner was on the way. I left my name and number incase the owner needed help we would be willing to donate towards the vet bills. As soon as we got home, we got a call that the owner didn't want her, but she would relinquish ownership so that Maya could get help. We are now trying to help this 7 month old Husky that has a broken pelvis in 4 places and a dislocated right hip joint.. She has spent four days in emergency and will go into surgery on Wednesday, November 14. We will be looking for a permanent wonderful home for her once she has recovered and we are able to learn more about her personality.

Her emergency hospital bills were just a little over $2000 and her Surgery was a little over $3000. Thank you, thank you to everyone that donated to help Maya!!!

Have and questions or comments please feel free to email me here.

Below I will provide updates on Maya's progress and recovery. Please check back often to see new pictures and stories of Maya.

Maya goes to the Surgeons for consultation.

I was hoping Maya would be able to get into surgery today, but she must wait until Wednesday. Here she is at the doctor's office:

I will have another update on Wednesday.

November 14, 2007

Maya goes to surgery.

This morning we brought Maya to the hospital for her surgery. The surgeon will be calling us with updates later in the day.

This was in the morning on the way to the surgeons.

We wait in the car for the doctor to be ready for her. She loves to have her belly rubbed and it calms her down.

We got the call that her surgery is done and she did great. We will get another update tomorrow morning and then should be able to pick her up around 3pm. The surgery was to fix her dislocated hip, but her pelvis will have to heal with time.

November 15, 2007

Maya is back from surgery.

We picked Maya up at 3pm today. Unfortunately she is still in some pain due to the trauma, but she has mainly been sleeping since she got back which is very good. She needs lots of rest. She doesn't currently want to stand at all, but I hope that in the next day or so, she will want to.

She was very hungry, the vet said she didn't want to eat. Now that she is comfy in her makeshift bedroom, she was eager to eat! Oh we also put some fresh cooked chicken in there, that made her happy.

She also was very very tired. She needs lots and lots of rest!

I also wanted to thank everyone that has donated towards Maya's bills. I can't thank you all enough. Her surgery and emergency bill grand total has come to $5,351. She is blessed to have all of you out there to help her get healthy. Thank you!

Rough Nights.

I will take some new pictures today, but wanted to give an update. Yesterday for lunchtime, we set up a little blanket outside and let Maya take in some fresh air. She really enjoyed that, she would perk her head up at the dogs barking in the neighborhood and the neighbors talking in their driveway. We will definitely be letting her have some more fresh air time each day. The nights are rough. She seems to be a lot more restless at night, I think it might be because the house is so quiet and we are not all bustling around. The doctors did say that if she doesn't want to stand for the next two weeks then that is ok, so we have not been concerned about her not wanting to stand. We are learning more about her, but only little tidbits thus far. We definitely know she loves loves her belly scratched. She also likes her ears rubbed. She doesn't like to be made to do anything she doesn't want to, which makes medicine time a very difficult time. She also dislikes her elizabethan collar, so we try to only put it on her when we can't be in the room with her. Pictures to come later in the day! Thanks!

Maya in the morning. She has started to lift her head a bit more which is nice!

She spent a long time outside today just lounging. She seems to really enjoy that.

Getting better.

Well the evening was not any easier, but the good news is, is that Maya has been showing a lot of improvement today. It first started when Ethan went in to say good morning to her, she wagged her tail. Well not quite a full wag, but she did move it just a little bit in an attempt to wag and that was the first time she has done this. Then she managed to flip over on her other side with minimal crying and the best part, she decided to lick her tummy under her hurt leg and she used her nose to push her leg up and didn't cry at all! It seems like some of the pain is finally going away. It still hurts her to stand at all, so she is not standing, but she is a lot more alert and active. Tomorrow, Monday, we have a vet visit to have her pain patch removed.

November 20, 2007

The Nocturnal Husky.

We had a vet visit yesterday to remove her pain patch and it went very well. She is on her way to being a young playful dog again. But Maya currently has been very nocturnal. We aren't sure why, but she will be so peaceful all day long and then all the sudden at night the activity begins. She was able to stand on her own last night, while using the gate we have around her room for balance. She is definitely getting tired of laying down! I will take pictures over Thanksgiving to post.

November 23, 2007

The Thanksgiving Husky.

Thanksgiving was a beautiful sunny day here. It was the perfect day to lay outside... and that is just what Maya did. We had a vegetarian thanksgiving so Maya and our dogs didn't get any special thanksgiving treats, but considering that Maya gets fresh boiled chicken in her food every meal, she didn't seem to mind. She is now very alert and definitely tired of laying around. She is starting to stand a lot more (unfortunately still with cries, but less cries). Here are some pics of her hanging outside!

November 25, 2007

Getting better every day.

Nights are getting better. She is now able to stand and walk a little without much pain at all. This is good because now she gets up and goes to the wee wee pads to pee, which makes her much happier. She doesn't enjoy peeing in her bed! We gave her a little sponge bath yesterday, she didn't seem to mind the water at all. Wednesday is our next vet visit, more updates then.

November 28, 2007

2 week vet visit.

It has been two weeks since Maya had her surgery. She has been showing a ton of improvement... standing on her own and walking a bit. She had a great vet visit, her stiches and staples were removed and everything seems to be healing just fine. Now we are entering into the physical therapy era! We have to work out her left leg that she won't put any pressure on so that it doesn't become atrophied. 4 times a day we need to work her leg out. I don't think for the first week she will enjoy that much, but she has to start using that leg again. She also is going to be able to get her first real bath this weekend too! We will take some pictures this weekend and post them :) Thank you again to everyone that has donated and is following Maya's adventure. Her next big vet visit will be in 4 weeks to get xrays!

November 30, 2007

Not a creature was stirring... not even a Maya.

Last night was the first night in two weeks that the house almost seemed peaceful. We did some intensive physical therapy with Maya and I think it exhausted her, plus we removed her elizabethan collar since her stiches were removed and she slept!!! I checked in on her at 5am and her eyes were closed and she looked so comfortable, it was such a nice thing to see. She of course isn't loving her therapy, but she is doing great at it and I have high hopes that in the next week she may be putting pressure on her left leg! Pictures to come this weekend.

Getting better!

On Saturday Maya had her first real bath. We were planning on doing it outside, but then it rained, so she got to go in the bathtub. She did amazing and didn't complain at all!! She is doing great with physical therapy. She doesn't love it, but she doesn't hate it. She hasn't started to put pressure on her left leg, but I know we are close to that happening. Here are some pics:

A very clean Maya.

Doing physical therapy. We still have to muzzle her during this part, because it's her least favorite part.

She gets tired from walking around the yard, while we try to encourage her to put her left leg down.

She decides to take a break. She has just started sitting in the last couple of days.

Getting that left leg to work... Slowly!

My computer is in the repair shop... UGH! So I couldn't get a good update done, but here are a bunch of pics we took over the weekend. I will have a longer update in the next couple days! Thanks.

Let's Play!

It has been 4 weeks since Maya's surgery, so we thought it was a good time that she could meet our dogs. Our female, Emma, doesn't care for other dogs too much and has leash aggression, so we have been going through training for her. So we introduced both of them with just some quick sniffs and some walking by each other. They both did very well. But our male, Edison, he likes everyone, so we let them hang out for a bit and play nicely with each other. Maya was so happy to have a doggie friend. Here are pics of them below:

Happy Holidays!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. We have been caught up in holiday preparations and I think deep down I have been also kind of avoiding this update because I know what I needed to write. That is we are getting closer to the time when we need to find Maya her new permanent, loving home. It's of course difficult for many reasons, but also joyous because she deserves a good home where she can be spoiled. We want to make sure that she does get the right home, so we are going to be very picky on the home she goes to. We have been observing Maya's behaviors and also reading everything we can on Huskys. I am pretty certain that Maya fits in very well with what we have read about Huskys. She definitely wants to run, really wants to run. She shows great interest in all the small animals that are outside of our yard. She stands alert when she sees squirrels or hears birds and I wouldn't doubt that if she wasn't on a leash she would eagerly and easily jump our 4 foot fence to get to them. She loves playing with dogs, so far we have only had her with our 45lb dog, I am not sure how she would do with a small dog, but my brother has a small dog that we could test her on leash with. The things I am positive about is that she should have a home with another dog and with someone that would like to be very active. She probably needs a large yard and definitely needs high fences. She loves the cold! She loves to cuddle and lay her head on your lap. And if someone has already had a husky or has a husky, I think that would be a huge bonus. I'm sure many people wonder why we don't just keep her, the unfortunate thing is that we have a female dog that is not as fond of other dogs as our male is and we can't see her getting along with another female. They have had some slight interaction together and we hope maybe there will be some more, but as far as long term, we would be worried. If you are interested in adopting Maya, please CLICK HERE to visit the page I have made her at the rescue The Brittany Foundation that I volunteer with or email me here. We have gone through the worst of times with Maya, from carrying her when her hips would just dangle and she would scream the worst screams, to none of us sleeping at night as we tried to keep her comforted. We just want to see her go to a home where she will be loved, spoiled and most of all kept safe! I have read enough now that talks about how Huskys because of their love of running and being adventurous often get hit by cars, I just don't want to think that could ever happen to Maya again! I am also up for driving her anywhere, so if you live out of California, please still feel free to contact us. We have her follow up vet appointment on January 4th to get her xrays and then we will have a better update on her healing.

I wish everyone a safe and wonderful holiday and a happy new year. Thank you again to everyone that has helped Maya, she is a beautiful loving dog and has such a wonderful life ahead of her.

The Holiday Husky!

Maya got to spend her first christmas with us and she had a lot of fun. We had family over so she got to say hi to a lot of people and she got a special gift. We also took her to the park on Christmas Day. It was her first time out of our yard since she got with us. Here are a few pictures. I will write more on January 4th when we hear about her xrays.

Do "The Husky"

Over the weekend we let Maya have a little off leash time in our yard. Here is a little video of it.

Happy New Year!

Maya had her vet visit today and it seems that she has healed very well. And our fear that her foot was hurt is luckily just a fear, her foot is fine. We now need to just go back to really trying to get her to put pressure on her left leg. She then goes back to the vets in 2 weeks and he will see if she has shown improvement. We have our work cut out for us, because she is very nervous about using that leg and she thinks she gets around just fine without it! I will try to get some pics of her this weekend if the rain lets up a little bit :).

What's the latest news?

Well I'm glad you asked. Maya went to the vets on January 17 and her back leg was still hurting her. So the vet feels that the screws in her hip are irritating her and he is going to remove them. Her vet visit will be this Wednesday to have them removed and we hope this will then start her recovery to putting pressure on her back leg! In the meantime we have been up to a lot. We just this weekend finally introduced Maya and our female cattledog, Emma, to each other. It has been a slow process of getting Emma used to Maya being in the house and letting her see her and take walks with her and be in the backyard together separated by gates. But this weekend we finally let them out together. Emma of course did her Alpha dog stuff, but all in all they got along great and have spent the last two days hanging out together! We also thought today that we would take all the dogs up to Mt. Wilson to play in the snow. Well we got up to 5000 feet and we still didn't get to any snow, but the dogs still had a great time going on a little hike and it was absolutely beautiful out. Below are some pictures of Emma and Maya meeting and our non-snow adventure.

The Four-Legged Husky.

My apologies for not doing an update before we left town, we got a little crazed with doggie care and packing that we just didn't have a chance. So the update before we left town was that Maya went to her first physical therapy appointment. She got in the water tank and do a few minutes of exercise. We then got homework that we needed to each day with massaging her paw and doing slow walks to get her to put down her leg. Well we were off to Mexico, so my mom took over for the initial at home therapy. Well to our wonderful surprise when we got home today, Maya was putting her leg down and walking on it!!! She has a ways to go with strengthing it and when she starts to move fast or get excited she lifts her leg back up, but this is such great progress and we are so so excited. I have her second physical therapy appointment tomorrow, so I will make sure to get some pictures and give another update.

Also I just received an email while I was go of a wonderful husky rescue story in Arizona, but this husky has juvenile cataracts and needs cataract surgery, so if you would like to help this husky, they are accepting donations at Arizona Siberian Husky Rescue group. He is really such a cutie!!

Maya is a Puppy.

Well I have to apologize again for the late update. I am working extremely long hours at work and mainly just sleeping when I'm not working. Maya is doing great, and I promise after March 12th I will do a long update with pictures and video of Maya in physical therapy. I can definitely tell that Maya is feeling better because her puppy-ness is really coming out. She is digging up the yard and eating plants and chewiing up clothes and shoes! Please check back next after March 12th!

"Husky-therapy"

My project deadline has passed and my life should start getting back to normal, which means it is time for a Maya update!!! She is doing excellent. She is walking 97% of the time on her leg and putting it down when she is standing. The vet has said that she has healed wonderfully. She has a couple more physical therapy sessions and then just starts to be a normal pup. Below is a picture from one of her therapy sessions and video from her therapy session. I will try to get some more pictures this weekend posted!

"Maya, Sweet, Maya"

Things have been crazy over here at our place. We are doing some remodeling and so our house is a bit chaotic. Which means I apologize for the late update. But with this update comes some very good news. Maya has found her forever home and will be going to live with her new parents by the end of April/early May. They are wonderful, loving people and have a large backyard for Maya to get all of her Huskiness out. She had a great time when she visited running and checking out every little bit of the yard. We are very excited and so happy that she will finally be able to have that loving bond and family to cuddle with every night. We will always have Maya in our hearts and luckily her parents want to keep us updated on how she is doing. That makes us happy. We did have some luck with having our female Emma, 98% of the time get along with her, but unfortunately there was always that dominance thing going on and we couldn't leave Emma alone with her. Please check back for at least one more update before Maya does go off on her new adventure and below are some overdue pictures of her recently!

Emma shares her crazy side with us.

Maya experiences the sprinklers for the first time, unlike our dogs who think getting one drop of water on them is the worst thing ever... Maya couldn't get enough of it.

Maya has a family

I am happy to report that Maya has gone to live with her forever family. She has already been enjoying running and exploring their large yard and helping clean it of any other critters that thought they lived there... nope Maya lives there now!! Below are pictures of Maya enjoying our sprinklers one day and her with her wonderful new family, Liz and Tom.

One of Maya's favorite things... sprinklers

She likes to attack them.
